Apple & Chocolate Crumble
Yummy sweet treat for tots & adults alike
By Sim Ee Waun
Children generally dislike cinnamon, but chocolate is always a hit with young palates. And what’s there not to like about this gooey, sticky crumble that’s full of yummy half-melted choc chips? Serve with ice-cream if you like, or a good healthy shot of brandy for the grown-ups.
Serves 4
Ingredients
1 cup plain flour
100g butter, cubed
½ cup brown sugar
¾ cup chocolate chips (use more if you like!)
3 apples (Granny Smith or Gala), skinned, cored and cut into wedges
2 tbsps castor sugar
Method
1. Preheat oven for about 20 minutes at 180 deg C.
2. Place flour and butter in a large mixing bowl and use your fingertips to rub mixture together until it resembles breadcrumbs. Stir in the brown sugar and a third of the chocolate chips.
3. In a separate bowl, toss the apple wedges and castor sugar to mix, then arrange them in a baking dish.
4. Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips over, spreading them out evenly.
5. Top evenly with the crumble mixture, then bake in the oven at 180 deg C for 45 to 50 minutes.
6. Serve hot.
DID YOU KNOW?
To ensure good-quality chocolate chips, look out for a pleasant chocolate smell and a smooth, glossy unblemished appearance. Your chips should be smooth and velvety on the palate, and not taste of chemicals.
