The Sad Truth
Help me! I am suffering from prenatal blues.
Q I suffer from prenatal blues, and read that depression during pregnancy may lead to a premature baby. Is this true?
Gloria Fong, Mount Sinai
A Untreated depression during pregnancy is linked to a higher incidence of premature birth. Seek psychiatric care - counselling and medication will control the ill-effects of depression. Some patients with depression may stop taking their medication during pregnancy because they fear that the drugs may harm the foetus. This is unwise as depression may lead to other medical and social problems.
