Mercury Rising
Which oily fish can I take during pregnancy?
Q I’ve read that some oily fish like tuna are high in mercury, which may harm an unborn baby. Which oily fish are safe to eat and is it better to take an omega 3 supplement instead?
Teo Nai Tzi, Whampoa Drive
A Omega 3 fatty acids play an important role in brain function as well as normal growth and development. It’s found in fish such as salmon, halibut, and tuna, and marine products such as seaweed, krill and algae, certain plants, and nut oils. Certain types of oily fish are high in mercury and can harm both mother and baby. These include swordfish, shark, king mackerel, tuna and herring. Pregnant women, nursing mothers, young children, and women who might become pregnant should avoid these types of fish. Alternatively, take a supplement that is certified mercury-free.
