Double Take
Does folic acid consumption increase my chances of conceiving twins?
Q Does taking folic acid increase the likelihood of conceiving twins?
Chee Mei Wei, Marine Vista
A There is no clear scientific evidence that taking folic acid prior to conception increases the likelihood of having twins. You’re more likely to get twins if you’re over 35, have a family history of multiple pregnancies, or are receiving fertility treatments. Twin pregnancies are complicated and a significant number of twins are born prematurely. Because of the increased health risks to the mother and babies, fertility treatment protocols are developed to reduce the incidence of multiple pregnancies.
