Cross the Breech
My baby is breech at 36 weeks. What can I do?
Q 1'm 36 weeks pregnant and my baby is breech. Is there anything I can do to help him turn?
Cynthia Pereira, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4
A If you have no other complications, your doctor may use a technique - called external cephalic version - to turn the baby. This procedure carries a risk of complications such as premature labour, premature rupture of the membranes, placental abruption and foetal distress. In practice, very few doctors perform this procedure. I will recommend a Caesarean section to a woman who has a breech baby. This is because vaginal breech delivery carries a risk of brain damage and birth trauma that may result in permanent weakness of the arms.
This question is answered by Dr Koh Chung Fai, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
