Hello Kitty
Must I get rid of my kitten now that I'm pregnant?
Q We got a kitten before I knew I was pregnant, and now I'm worried about toxoplasmosis. Does my pet have to go?
Nur Ibrahim, Yishun Street 22
A Toxoplasmosis is caused by the parasite toxoplasma gondii ? it’s contracted by eating infected or undercooked meat, especially mutton, or via contact with infected cat faeces. Since there is a danger of miscarriage if you contract it in early pregnancy, get tested early. However, most babies don’t get infected, even with maternal exposure to the parasite. To prevent toxoplasmosis:
• Do not handle untested cats or empty cat litter boxes.
• Feed your kitten with store-bought food and prevent it from eating mice, which could harbour the parasite.
• Keep your kitten off your bed, blankets, pillows and sheets.
• If your kitten goes outside often, do not hold it close to your face, and avoid gardening in areas where there may be cat faeces.
• Always wash your hands well after handling the kitten, soil, or uncooked meat and vegetables.
