How can labour be induced?

Q I don’t want to be overdue. How can I help start labour?
Celeste Lim, Woodlands Drive 72

A You may have heard of “natural” methods to induce labour, which may include the use of herbs, castor oil or other agents to stimulate labour. As the safety of these methods is not established, you should not try untested methods of starting labour without talking to your gynae. In certain circumstances, such as prolonged pregnancy, you and your doctor may decide to get labour started. Various methods are available, including using pessaries to dilate the cervix, intravenous drips to induce contractions, and rupturing the membranes.

This question is answered by Dr John Yam, a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Gleneagles Hospital.
