Nutrition
Weight Worry
Is your child eating enough solid food?

Q. My son is 15 1/2 months old and he only weighs around 10kg. He drinks about 28 oz of milk per day and eats solid food twice per day.
He is allergic to eggs and grapes and within these three months, he has suffered twice from a serious case of diarrhea. Normally he drinks about 3 oz per feeding at the beginning and we always try to let him finish the rest of the milk later. I'm worried about his weight. Is there a way to help him put on some weight?
Lili, via e-mail

A. As your son is already 15 1/2 months old, it looks like he is drinking more milk and taking less solid food at this stage. Try to cut down the milk intake by introducing more solid food, if he drinks more milk he is most likely not hungry enough to take his solid food.
At this stage milk alone may not give him enough nutrients and calories as his energy level is higher. You can offer him small snacks in between breakfast, lunch and dinner.
