Eat Well
Eating well is very important as your child develops. We offer you some great tips to getting your tots to eat well
DO
- Offer your child one or two healthy snacks In addition to her three main meals, give her yoghurt, nuts and wholegrain crackers.
- Make food appear attractive Children often pick what they think looks good, so try cutting vegetables of different colours into interesting patterns. You can also serve dishes on crockery in citrus colours like orange as it stimulates the appetite.
- Get your child involved in planning and preparing the meals Seize the opportunity to explain the nutritional value of each food. This way, she will feel motivated to choose healthy foods.
- Be a role model yourself Your child usually takes the cue from you, so be conscious about your reaction to healthy foods. If you are picky about food, chances are, she may be copying you!
- Read food labels Choose foods with low or no added sugar and salt. For instance, offer your little one water instead of a soft drink.
DON’T
- Give up Keep offering your child the food she’s rejecting, such as vegetables. Tell her to try at least a bite but don’t insist that she finishes the whole portion. It usually takes an average of eight times for a child to decide to eat what’s presented.
- Make food an emotional issue Instead of fighting your child or forcing her to eat a particular food, persuade him slowly with patience and affection.
- Leave the TV on during meals Studies have shown that children who watch TV consume fewer vegetables and more fried food, a result of being inundated with advertisements for unhealthy food choices, such as carbonated drinks and high-sugar snacks.
- Offer alternatives Make it a point for your child to eat the same dishes as you, so she will understand that she won’t have any other food options.
- Try to sneak it into his diet Educate your child on why she should be eating healthy foods, rather than mislead her into eating it. Otherwise, she may be suspicious about foods you serve her in future.
