Healthy Body
To Itch His Own
My baby keeps scratching his head. Is this normal?

Q My 9-month-old baby boy scratches his head often and once, we even found  scratches on his head the next morning.  Is this because his hair is growing? I’ve tried to shave his head a few times but his hair still doesn’t grow evenly. Is there anything I can apply on his head to help his hair growth?
Candees Choo, Hougang Avenue 9

A Babies scratch their head as a matter of self-exploration and is probably not related to his hair growth. It is sometimes associated with his bedtime. It is common among babies to have uneven hair growth, the back of the head that rests on the bed usually has less hair. Some people suggest applying olive oil on his scalp to aid hair growth. This may also treat an underlying cradle cap condition.

This question is answered by Dr Low Kah Tzay, a consultant paediatrician and child development specialist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
