Does colour blindness run in the family?

Q My paternal grandfather is colour blind. What are the chances that my child will also be colour blind?
Shereen Phua, Hindhede Walk

A There are various causes of colour blindness or deficiency, some are inherited conditions while others are related to macular degeneration.  Even the inherited conditions are not uniform - while some are present at birth, others present later and may progress. A common gene affecting colour blindness or deficiency is carried in the X chromosome. If a boy inherits this chromosome, he will likely be colour blind. However, if a girl inherits this chromosome, she may not show the condition as she may have another normal X chromosome. As a result, one in 20 men are colour blind but this condition is seen in less than one in every 100 women.
