HELP! My baby's colicky, what do I do?
Q I'm a first time mother. My daughter is a little over a month old, and is suffering from colic. I'm giving her Bebelac formula, as recommended by my doctor. Is there a cure for colic? I'm using Dr Brown’s baby bottle to reduce the problem - the instructions indicate that the milk should be stirred and not shaken, but when I stir, it does not dissolve properly.

A Infantile colic commonly occurs in babies from about a month old and can cause them great discomfort. If you can breastfeed, do so as it will reduce the occurrence of colic. Using “anti-colic” bottles can help some children ? swirl the milk in the bottle instead of shaking it. Don’t use excessively hot water as the milk powder usually dissolves better in less warm water. Let the bottle stand for a while before you feed your child. Other suggestions are infant massage, soft music, colic medication and even car rides. Most babies outgrow colic by about 6 months of age.
This question is answered by Dr Low Kah Tzay, a consultant paediatrician and child development specialist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
