Calm Balm
How do I pacify my hungry baby while I prepare her food?

Q My daughter cries a lot when she is hungry, before I prepare her feed. How do I calm her down? I don’t like the idea of using a pacifier.
Koh Wynn Lynn, Bishan Street 24

A Babies who tend to cry a lot when they are hungry also tend to drink very fast. These babies are also more likely to develop colic. Using a pacifier does help some children.  Otherwise, another caregiver can hum a nursery rhyme, or gently rock and burp her.

This question is answered by Dr Low Kah Tzay, a consultant paediatrician and child development specialist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
