Breast Advice
Can I continue breastfeeing after he turns 1?

Q My baby, whom I’ve breastfed since birth, will turn 1 soon.  If I continue breastfeeding him (instead of giving him formula milk), will I be depriving him of any nutrients that are essential to his growth?
Ong Poh Swee, Bedok North Avenue 2

A It is fine to continue breastfeeding him if he eats a balanced diet of grains, meat, fish, fruits, vegetables and other dairy products. However, if you continue to breastfeed, you should increase your calcium and vitamin D intake.

Your question is answered by Dr Low Kah Tzay, a consultant paediatrician and child development specialist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
