In A Nut Shell
Will my child inherit my allergies?
Q I’m pregnant, and have always been allergic to peanuts and shellfish. Will my baby stand a higher chance of being allergic to these foods as well?
Linda Nair, Siglap Road
A While food allergies are more common if there is a positive family history, it is also possible that your baby may not inherit your food allergy if you breastfeed your baby for at least the first six months and avoid weaning her before she is 6 months old.
Your question is answered by Dr Low Kah Tzay, a consultant paediatrician and child development specialist at Mount Elizabeth Hospital.
