Thirst Served
My tot refuses to drink water. What can I do?
Q Even though we set an example ourselves, my toddler simply refuses to drink water. When we ask him to, he only takes a sip. His main source of liquids is three bottles of milk, a little soup and fruit twice daily. I’m getting stressed as he gets mouth ulcers often. What is the best way to get him to drink more water? I read that we should only offer cordials once a week, so what is your take on very diluted Ribena or fruit juice?
Ingrid Quek, Senja Road
A It is a challenge to get some toddlers to drink water. The earlier you introduce this concept, the more likely he will adapt to it. You’ll have to keep offering it to him. Some suggestions include using colourful bottles or training cups, and playing make-believe games. If there are no other ways to feed him water, you can try very diluted fruit juices.
