CELEB MAMAS
GWYNETH PALTROW: EARTH MAMA
You may not have the Oscar or the rock-god husband, and you’d probably think twice before naming your firstborn after a piece of fruit, but if you know your macrobiotic morsels from your microwave meals, you’d probably find yourself sharing soya lattes, mung bean recipes and reusable nappy tips with Gwyneth Paltrow.
During both her pregnancies, Gwynnie was more than happy to be papped in organic juice bars without so much as a hint of red-carpet glamour and still managed to look naturally glowing. On her much-derided choice of name for daughter Apple, 4, Gwyneth claimed it was sweet, wholesome and clean, which just about sums up this movie star’s image, too.
She’s as famous for her devotion to yoga, alternative therapies and a natural, macrobiotic diet as she is for her Hollywood films, but we love her best for admitting to caving in to cravings for cheese toasties, pizzas and Mexican food during her pregnancies, and getting a little post-birth slimming assistance from a girdle!
Gwyneth may be an A-lister, but she’s also an environmentally-concerned, family-focused mum who no doubt has the odd bar or two of Fair Trade chocolate stashed at the bottom of her Balenciaga handbag.
ANGELINA JOLIE: ACTIVIST MUMMY
You’d think anyone who had created a child with Brad Pitt would consider their contribution to the world complete, but Angelina Jolie is a mama on a mission. Shunting her ever-growing “rainbow” family around the globe to highlight the plight of the world’s poor, Angelina is a passionate, if unconventional, mum to adopted Cambodian refugee Maddox, Ethiopian Zahara and Vietnamese Pax Thien, plus natural daughter Shiloh, 2, and 8-month-old twins Knox and Vivienne.
From her “wild child” past (which includes exchanging vials of blood with ex-husband Billy Bob Thornton and snogging her brother at the Oscars) to her current incarnation as UN goodwill ambassador, Angelina continues to defy Hollywood stereotyping and has refused to marry Brad (is the woman insane?!), claiming their commitment as parents is far more important than a marriage certificate.
Whatever your opinion of her may be, Angelina is certainly not just another spoilt A-lister paying lip service to charitable causes. She has stated that she now plans to spend most of her time in humanitarian efforts, to be financed by her actress salary ? she devotes one third of her income to savings, one third to living expenses and one third to charity. “It became clear to me I was an incredibly privileged Hollywood star and I had to do something against the screaming injustice on this planet,” she has said.
So whether you’re a seasoned campaigner or motherhood has made you passionate about a cause, Angelina is your celeb mum buddy (just as long as your cause isn’t to become the next Mrs Brad Pitt, that is…).
KATIE PRICE: DOWN-TO-EARTH MUM
You may have difficulty imagining sitting down for a cup of tea and a cosy chat with ex-English glamour model Jordan, but behind the professional alter ego is Katie Price, mum to disabled 6-year-old son Harvey, and two younger children with husband Peter Andre, Junior, 3, and Princess, 21 months. And for all Jordan’s in-your-face brashness, Katie is undoubtedly a devoted and down-to-earth mum.
“I’m a working mum, I’ve worked to put a roof over our heads. I just live life like everyone else,” Katie says. And, while the last part may not be entirely easy to agree with, Katie’s life with her children does appear to be pretty normal ? if you ignore the regular celeb magazine covers, TV documentaries, record deals, glitzy red-carpet functions and autobiographies.
“It’s crazy in the morning, like any household,” says the celeb mum. “The kids have their baths around 6.15pm. I love that time of the evening. I treasure those special family moments so much.”
Working and coping with a disabled child, a preschooler and a toddler isn’t easy, but Katie’s attitude is pragmatic. “I don’t ask for sympathy. I am what I am and my son’s got what he’s got. I was put on the earth to deal with that, so I just get on with it.”
And while the feisty, super-endowed Jordan may not be your average busy mum’s idea of a best mate (not least because you’d never be able to borrow her clothes!), the surprisingly normal Katie Price most definitely is.
ANNA FRIEL: SCRUMMY MUMMY
Brit actress Anna Friel didn’t appear to have a single off day style-wise when she was expecting her daughter Gracie, 3, flaunting her bump in boho frocks by day and couture by night (and carrying off sky-high killer heels on the red carpet at six months pregnant). And while we salute her efforts to show the world that pregnancy and glamour don’t have to be mutually exclusive, the occasional “can’t be bothered with lippy today and these trackie bottoms are just sooooo comfy” paparazzi snap might have endeared her to us a little bit more.
But despite being gorgeous, Anna, who conceived against the odds after suffering from endometriosis and ovarian cysts, does seem remarkably down-to-earth, choosing to live in unstarry Windsor with her actor partner David Thewlis, and seemingly content to push Gracie around the park in her Bugaboo pram.
And we can forgive her getting her sylph-like figure back within mere weeks of giving birth to Gracie because she did it without resorting to starvation diets or surgery. “I’d never judge until I find out how difficult it is to lose [the baby weight] myself. But I’m going to lose it naturally. I‘m not going for tummy tucks,” she said when pregnant. “Having a child puts everything into perspective and losing weight isn’t a priority.”
Anna recently topped a lads’ mag poll to find the UK’s favourite yummy mummy – and it’s not hard to see why. For the style and fashion tips alone, we’d have her round for a pot of camomile tea and a plate of chocolate biscuits any day!
