No Laughing Matter!
Quirky cultural taboos (observe at your own peril)!

Chinese
  • Can only watch TV or read for 15 minutes at a time, so that the eyes are well-rested.
  • Should not cry or their eyesight will deteriorate.

  • Cannot carry heavy objects (including the baby), over-exert, or walk up and down the stairs. Otherwise, the body’s muscles will slacken.
Malays
  • Avoid knocking their toes, because that will affect the uterus (said to be connected to the feet).
  • Avoid squatting, because it will cause their uterus to drop.
  • Can’t read or watch TV as it strains the eyes.
Indians
  • Can’t step out of the bedroom nor enter the kitchen in the first two weeks because the new mum is considered “dirty” or unhygenic.
  • Husband and wife are not allowed to sleep in the same room for 40 days. Instead, the woman’s mum or mother-in-law will stay in her room to care for her and the newborn.
  • Can’t eat mangoes, pumpkin and seafood, as these will cause the breastfed baby to vomit. Seafood also causes itch in the mother and rashes in the baby.
